In October 2016 I was able to realize a childhood dream of mine. I was able to stand next to a Space Shuttle. My dream would have been to see it on the launch pad, but alas that is no longer possible. Discovery now resides at the National Air and Space Museum - Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.
I have always had a love for space and space travel. To see one of the shuttles up close was truly a bucket list item. I was absolutely amazed at how huge it is. It is amazing that we were able to put something that huge into space and return it to Earth. Discovery flew 39 missions for NASA starting in 1984 and ending in 2011. Discovery's most notable mission is probably the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990. It was also the first shuttle launched after the temporary hold on space flight following both the Challenger and Columbia disasters.
I regret not ever making it out to see a shuttle launch in person. However, I now have a goal of being there to see the launch whenever we send a manned spacecraft up from the United States. again.
